How it got here

January's Comic Wonder of the Month — Funnybone went on a joke-telling tear in January, and picked up our Comic Wonder of the Month honors for that month with this performance.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

The joke is a little dirty, but not until the end. It is a classic joke of redirection, hitting you with a punchline you aren't necessarily expecting. One of the traits of a good joke is when someone "gets" the punchline as well as "gets" why he or she didn't see the punchline coming.

Funnybone could have mixed it up and used some different voice inflections for the doctor or woman, but overall the delivery and punchline was excellent.

How it got here

February's Comic Wonder of the Month — KFC outperformed all other competition for this month, and walked away with the Feburary Comic Wonder of the Month award.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

Ah, KFC. The man who nearly got us into a trademark issue with a certain fast food chain. It's a good thing we don't serve chicken with these jokes!

All kidding aside, what makes this joke a favorite of ours is KFC's soothing presentation. He's got a voice and a pace to it that could make a cougar purr. Take a listen and check out how he manages his pauses and inflections—they are picture perfect. The only thing missing from the joke would have been some better voice acting for the woman, but nonetheless it's a classic and one worthy of being a finalist.

How it got here

March's Comic Wonder of the Month — RancheroMan was a stud in 2007, and nearly beat out Captainhilariousness for the 2007 Comic Wonder of the Year award. With a few jokes told in March, we were blessed enough to get this gem which pulled in the Comic Wonder of the Month award for March.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

No one on Comic Wonder is better at building suspense than RancheroMan. He is the perfect example of story-based joke telling, where the performer guides the audience's emotions up and down with the anticpation of a resolution—or in our case, a fantastic punchline.

His skill at suspense-building is evident in his other jokes as well. "A Really Deep Hole" is probably our favorite, and is the all-time number one played joke in Comic Wonder history. "Spring Fishing" and "Lone Ranger and a Misunderstanding Silver" are other examples of great story jokes.

If you want to learn how to tell a good story, or learn how to build suspense in your jokes, you should study RancheroMan's delivery.

April's Comic Wonder of the Month — 1anero burst onto the Comic Wonder scene with this joke and "Red Jacket". "The African Safari" ended up winning the Comic Wonder of the Week for him, and it was our best choice for April's Comic Wonder of the Month's award.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

All you really need to do is listen to the voices he uses, and you'll find why this joke is hilarious. Couple that with a fantastic punchline, and you have one fantastic Comic Wonder of the Month.

When you listen through other jokes 1anero has told, you'll come to realize how talented he is at voice acting. Our favorite one that has gone under the radar is "Trip to Rome". Many of his jokes will be used by the Comic Wonder staff over the holidays!

May's Comic Wonder of the Month — Skez63 took the Comic Wonder of the Month award for May.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

Drunk people + monkeys = funny. At least that's what we think after hearing this joke. Skez did an excellent job at doing voices for a drunk and an angry bar tender.

It was slightly hard to hear the punchline at the end, but when you get it, it's funny.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

Excellent punchline, pretty good redirection. This joke does a great job of placing the punchline where you least expect it.

July's Comic Wonder of the Month — After many weeks of joke telling, REC finally broke through with a Comic Wonder of the Week win. Then that joke won Comic Wonder of the Month!

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

The voice of the poor guy needed surgey alone is worth the Comic Wonder of the Month award. Add in a great punchline? Sold!

It's just too bad he gave up some of the punchline in the joke title!

August's Comic Wonder of the Month — Sam won the Comic Wonder of the Month for July with this piece, as well as Comic Wonder's "Funniest Personality in Radio" contest. We hear he's a legend out East!

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

Even though RancheroMan can pour on the awesome with his story jokes, we're big fans of short and sweet jokes. Sam's joke gave us just that: Great voices, terrific set up, and a punchline that knocks you on the forehead. All in under 40 seconds!

How it got here

September's Comic Wonder of the Month — Although we try to spread the Comic Wonder of the Month love, 1anero was just too good to pass up. He posted some strong performances in August, and this joke came away narrowly edging out others as August's winner.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

A lot of times, people to try force their voices. A blonde voice, a priest voice, a old man's voice... you have to make sure that it's still fluid and doesn't end up detracting to the joke, much less enhance it.

1anero's performances show what good voice acting is all about. He keeps the pace of it going, doesn't lose our interest, and pulls us deeper into the story. His "Hey baby" is so good, we say it here around the office.

The only real bummer about this joke is that it is a good example of selling the punchline too early. Many of those who listened to the joke said they could tell what the punchline was before it was told.

How it got here

October's Comic Wonder of the Month — A late bloomer, VoiceofElk recently joined Comic Wonder and has already cemented himself as one of the premier joke tellers on the site.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

You want drama? VoiceofElk has drama. One of the traits we've noticed with his jokes so far are perfectly placed pauses. This joke added the humor bridge needed between the violence and resolution of the story.

Oh yeah, the punchline made us pop a few blood vessels in our eyes. We thought it was that funny. It is a great example a joke that sets you up to expect something else, the hits you over the head (so to speak) with a punchline youget at the same time you realize it wasn't the one you were expecting. It's like having the hiccups and gas at the same time.

2008 Election Joke Epicenter Challenge — Apavlon beat out many formidable contenders for the best political joke of 2008.

Why it's funny (possible spoilers)

Great story, great voice, and fun punch line. Also, very topical, but that's to be expected! The length doesn't really detract from the story.

2008 Comic Wonder of the Year Finalists

Huh?

Since January 1st, Comic Wonder has been searching for the best joke teller on the planet. Our pick for 2008's winner is narrowed down from a list of Comic Wonders of the Week. Each month, we pick which joke deserved the award most, and kept it in the running for Comic Wonder of the Year.

Now, over 10 months later we've gotten our final list: 11 competitors will be considered by our panel of judges, and one will emerge the victorious winner.

The announcement was on December 1st, 2008. 1anero was the winner.

Our official rules can be found here.

2008 Trends

What was interesting this year?

  • Of the 11 Finalists, 4 were mild, 7 medium
  • Although spicey jokes are a part of joke culture, no spicey joke won any awards
  • Many of the performers who won awards did so after shortly joining Comic Wonder and telling many jokes within the first few weeks
  • Only two Comic Wonders of the Week ever asked for the doggy sweater
